Is javaw.exe infected with the W32/Trojan3.UJ virus?

This article applies to:
  • Platform(s): Windows 2000, Windows XP, Vista, Windows 2003
  • Browser(s): Internet Explorer 5.5, Internet Explorer 6.x, Internet Explorer 7.x, Firefox
  • Java version(s): 6.0, 6u10+

SYMPTOMS

During the install process, the user may be presented with a message saying that the W32/Trojan3.UJ virus has been found in javaw.exe. The anti-virus software may or may not automatically delete, incubate, quarantaine or remove javaw.exe, which will cause JAVA to no longer run.

The virus identified during the install is W32/Trojan3.UJ. The path to the two javaw.exe files:
C:\Program Files\JAVA\JRE6\BIN\JAVAW.EXE
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\JAVAW.EXE

CAUSE

Due to a bug in some third party antivirus software available in market, javaw.exe is wrongly detected as containing a virus. Some of these software manufacturers have already taken steps to fix this bug.

Javaw.exe is not infected by the W32/Trojan3.UJ. Every version of Java software is scanned with multiple antivirus products, at every stage of development, and before they are released to the public. We go through great lengths to ensure that our software is virus free.

Also here is the link to a forum where antivirus software F-PORT claims that they have fixed the problem and now javaw.exe will not be detected as a virus.

SOLUTION

We would recommend you to update your antivirus software. In case javaw.exe is still detected as a virus, you can contact your antivirus software company to report this issue and ask them to fix this bug.
