Where can I get support for other issues using the Store with my Mac?

This article applies to:
  • Platform(s): Macintosh OS X
  • Browser(s): All Browsers
  • Java version(s): Java 6 Update 13 or higher

Why is there a grey rectangle around the Java Store (Macintosh only) ?
This is a known issue. The workaround will be:
  1. Open Java Preferences (You can search for in from the magnifying glass in the upper right of your screen).
  2. Under the General tab, there is a Java Applications area that lists the different Java versions installed.
  3. Select 'Java 5' and drag it to the top of the list.
  4. Close the Java Preferences dialog window.
I updated my Mac with Apple's latest Java release and now I can't launch the Java Store

On June 19, 2009 Apple released a new version of Java for Macintosh users. Unfortunately, this breaks how Java Web Start applications are launched.

This change does not affect the way programs run - only how they are launched from a Web browser. If you've already installed the Java Store, and use a link on your desktop to launch the program, you can continue using the Java Store with that link. These instructions are for people who have not previously installed the Java Store, or who have not created an icon to launch it directly from the desktop. Fortunately, there is an easy fix for this problem.

Previously, if you used the default options: Open with: Java Web Start (default), and selected OK, the Java Store installation would have started. With the new Java version update, instead of launching the Java Store you will get a text editor window.

You can resolve this issue with just a few simple steps. All you have to do is direct your computer to the new location of the software used by Web browsers to launch Java applications. To do this, open the correct folder in a Finder window. Here is how to do it:
  1. Open a Finder window and go to your main hard drive
  2. Visit the following folder: System\Library\CoreService
  3. On that folder find Java Web Start.app. From this point onwards, the installation works as it did before the Apple update.
  4. That's it! You are done. Click the Refresh button on your browser and select Resend if your browser asks you, and you will be provided the JNLP file again. Click OK to run it.
  5. Check the box next to Allow all applications from... so that you don't see these security dialogs again and hit Allow. Do the same for all the security pop-ups that appear.
  6. Once the installation is complete, you will get a dialog box asking if you want to create an icon on your desktop to launch the Java Store again later. You should allow the icon by selecting Save. This will allow you to come back to the Java Store without having to go through all these steps again.
