Is it safe to run an application from a publisher that is listed as UNKNOWN?It is not safe to run an application if the publisher is listed as UNKNOWN or untrusted by a Security Warning. If the publisher cannot be verified, then the application may not actually be provided by vendor you think. You can be assured that an application is from a verifiable publisher if it has been certified by a trusted Certificate Authority (CA). The CA does the job of confirming that the information related to the application publisher in the certificate used by the application is accurate. If the application has a trusted CA certificate, you will will be shown a blue shield icon (and not a yellow shield or warning triangle). Browsers can recognize applications with verifiable publishers and will provide you with the publisher name. If the browser shows the publisher name as UNKNOWN, then you are advised not to allow the application to run as you may put the security of the personal information on your computer at risk. Java provides a setting to restrict running applications from untrusted or unknown publishers.
