- Sun Microsystems' Java Virtual Machine (JVM), which is part of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), is a highly secure, open, robust, viable, and flexible platform. The Microsoft VM (MSVM) is based on an older version (1.1 released in 1997) of Java technology.
